Geocache Description:

at this location you will be looking for a pill bottle, painted black to blend into the shadows, and reachable from the edge of the mound. the container does not have room for a pen, so please bring your own writing implement with you. it is not placed in a disrespectful manner, and should be hunted during daylight hours only.

I recently completed the requirements of a challenge cache involving ancient monuments (visit link) earthworks, mounds, petroglyphs/pictographs. stuff of that nature that has been there for a long, long time. I have enjoyed visiting sites of this nature before I started caching, and did so at many. my problem with completing that challenge was most of those sites with caches where no where near me and my corner of the state. in doing research on mounds in Ohio I found many that did not have caches. a few where close enough to my home that I felt it worth my time and effort to share those sites with my fellow geocachers. so I came down here to do just that. this could be just a quick numbers find, and nothing else. it may be used to help somebody else meet there requirements for the challenge. what ever the reason for your visit please take a minute and view the mound, and contemplate those who where here before us.

this one was a must do for me. I'm a big fan of cemetery caches, in fact about half of my hides are at cemeteries. I was not able to find much information on this mound online, but I'll include what I could. the mound it's self was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and is one of three Knox county mounds on that Register. the main reason it was placed on that list was it's potential to reveal further information about it's builders, believed to be the Adena. it has been excavated at some unknown time in the past. that was evident as once you see the mound you will find a "modern" grave marker right on top of it. during that excavation burned bones where found which is typical of Adena culture, and helped to determine the mound was likely constructed by Adena. the mound is roughly 5.5 feet tall, has a diameter of 75 feet, and located on a hill.

while doing research on this mound I found a picture of the mausoleum down the hill. it has a mound of earth behind it, and the claim was that it was the Mound, but I do not believe it to be the actual mound. it was too tall, and not on top of a hill. this one meets the specifications that I read about the mound. could the lower earthen mound be an Adena mound? perhaps, it does look the part. I'll include coordinates for that as well, and if anybody has any local knowledge, please feel free to share it and I'll include it here.

congratulations to rcmq13 for FTF on 9-7-13
