Geocache Description:

A Short History of the “B” Street Pier AKA “The Michael J. Scavuzzo Public Fishing Pier”

In August of 1987, the California Coastal Commission gave Crescent City a permit to demolish the old Dutton Pier after 90% of it had already been burned down. Arrangements were made for the California National Guard from Eureka to perform the demolition; the demolition began in September 1988, it took three months to complete the work as the National Guard only met one weekend a month. The cost of the new pier was about $1.5 million and was built in the same location as the old one, except at a slightly different angle. The new pier is 720 feet long and 12 feet wide. Ribbon cutting ceremonies took place on October 14, 1989 and two weeks later it was opened to the public.

Information taken from Footprints by Dave Gray December 21, 2006, Triplicate

I have fond memories of getting up early and taking the kids and the crab rings and heading to the pier to catch dinner, of course they were more interested in ? them upside down and putting them to “sleep”.
