1885: National champion in gymnastics
1889: Member of the Norwegian national team in gymnastics at the World Exhibition in Paris, where he became world champion.
1893-1896: Participated in the first Fram expedition, initially as stoker in, but "upgraded" to meteorological assistant during the expedition. Was Nansen's only companion in the three weeks and three days long sledge journey to 86 ° 14 in 1895, and the subsequent 5-month return trip to Franz Josef Land
1896: Appointed Knight of St. Olav "for scientific merit."
