Did you know that the traditional tale of the Billy Goats Gruff was Norwegian? The physical geography of Norway does NOT feature in finding this cache! It is well away from any roads over fairly level or level ground, and can be approached via Public Footpaths from three directions. Starting points could be from Hertford Heath or Mangrove Road. Two of the routes are in open countryside, and one is through Balls Wood. Maps should be consulted for the proper footpaths.
Balls Wood is owned and managed by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust (have a look at their website to see the excellent work they do), which only recently acquired it after a successful campaign to save it from being sold for development. It is a wonderful, quiet place with much wildlife to see and enjoy through the seasons. Well placed information boards around the wood will tell you more. A delightful oasis for geocaching in the crowded S.E of England!
In the tale of the Billy Goats Gruff a family a three goats have to cross a bridge to reach delicious pasture on the other side. However underneath the bridge lives an equally hungry and bad tempered Troll. He has a habit of eating goats who trit-trot across his bridge. Hopefully you will encounter no mythical creature problems locating the troll/cache. The cache is a small plastic food container.
