The trail
This cache is one of a series of caches placed around Dumbreck Marsh local nature reserve. The area once showed the signs of the area's mining history, and was covered in bings and the lines of old mineral railways. Now, however, it is the site of grassland, ponds, and a nice trail which is perfect for a gentle walk or cycle.
There are various possible access points, but the easiest two are probably from Auchinstarry where there is plenty of available parking, or from Gavell Road where there is easy on-road parking.
Many thanks to North Lanarkshire Council's Greenspace Development department for granting permission for these caches to be placed.
The cache - Kilsyth Academy View
This cache is placed at a bridge which - like much of the trail around the marsh - offers great views of the tower of Kilsyth Academy to the north-east. Designed by noted Brutalist architect Sir Basil Spence in the inter-war years, construction was halted during WWII and the school was only opened in the mid-1950s. It may not be a pretty building, but it's a landmark that can be seen throughout the town.
