The quarry was a significant employer of many locals throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The stone was shipped off and used all over the world, valued for its strength and appealing pink colour. The stone can be seen all over the western tip of Mull and surrounding islands, and there are eight wee quarries here, although Tormore is by far the biggest.
You can see the hill, Tormore, from the village- you want to get to the other side of it. To walk from Fionnphort, walk down the wee hill opposite the shop until the road ends. Then it's a short hike up to the quarry any way you like. The most accessible way is if you keep to the right, the path will peter out very quickly but keep going and head up - it's very simple. Beware of quad tracks though - they tend to be muddier than foot paths. The bumps on the grassy hill are lazybeds where people used to grow potatoes. Near the top of the hill you can walk on the rough road till you see the upper quarry.
