Geocache Description:

Buckland House is a State Heritage Place within the Onkaparinga Council District.

The building was used as the first school in Willunga when it was established by James Bassett in 1847. Following the construction of the Boy's School next door in 1862, the building was used as a girl's school up until 1875 when it was converted into a residence.

His wife continued to teach girls at Buckland House. The Bassetts involved themselves and their pupils in community affairs and were widely respected. James conducted evening classes in the school for boys of the district and also, being an accomplished musician, held music classes for local residents. Jamers Bassett died in 1875.

The Church of England conducted a school for boys and girls in the schoolroom during the 1890s. From 1896 it was used as the Willunga Council Chamber until the Council moved to new premises on St Peters Terrace.

Comprising a substantial slate roof, little of the building has changed since the early 1840s. Walls are constructed of pug, with lathe and plaster ceilings, and slate floors.
