This cache is either the first or last cache of this series, depending on where you start!
Dunstable to Church End #1 starts at the edge of Beech Road, Dunstable, at the bottom of what’s called Stiper’s Hill. The field is a wheat field, and is also filled with beautiful poppies during the year. Note: you can’t access this cache from the road, you have to walk up the path and claim it from the field.
Once you have found the cache, walk up the hill past the underground water reservoir to N51 52.118 W000 30.447. This is the boundary footpath of Kensworth Chalk Pit which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
According to the Natural England website:
“This site provides the best Chalk Rock exposure in central England, a distinct band which forms a marker horizon in the late Cretaceous Period. The top surface of the Chalk Rock is extremely fossiliferous and has yielded many well preserved and rare specimens including ammonites. The large quarry exposes much of the Turonian stage and the base of the overlying Coniacian stage. The extent of the exposure here makes this an unrivalled locality for stratigraphic studies in the Upper Cretaceous.”
The site is still active, so when you’re up there, look out for big diggers and earth movers.
You can also view almost all of Dunstable from up here.
