Geocache Description:

ICE HOCKEY

Ice hockey is a team sport played on ice in which skaters use sticks to shoot a hard rubber hockey puck into their opponent's net to score points. In some countries, such as Canada and the United States, it is known as "hockey"; the name "ice hockey" is used in countries where "hockey" generally refers to field hockey.

A team usually consists of four lines of three forwards, three pairs of defensemen, and two goalies. Five members of each team skate up and down the ice trying to take the puck and score a goal against the opposing team. Each team has a goaltender who tries to stop the puck from going into the goal.

A fast-paced physical sport, hockey is most popular in areas of North America (particularly Canada and northern parts of the United States) and Europe. In North America, the National Hockey League (NHL) is the highest level for men's hockey and the most popular. It is the official national winter sport of Canada, where the game enjoys immense popularity. The first organized game was played on March 3, 1875, in Montreal.

Modern ice hockey is believed to have evolved from outdoor stick-and-ball games adapted to the icy conditions of Canada during the 19th century. The games of British soldiers and immigrants to Canada (influenced by First Nations stick-and-ball games) may have influenced the game played on ice skates (often with a puck) with sticks made by the Mi'kmaq people of Nova Scotia. Another theory is that the game was introduced by Icelandic immigrants adapting the game of knattleikr. These immigrants moved to Canada and the U.S. after the eruption of a volcano in Iceland in 1875. Immigrants from Iceland played for Canada, winning the first Olympic medal in hockey.

To get the answers for A-F, you will have to do a little research. The questions for A, B, and C will involve the Detroit Red Wings. The questions for D, E, and F will involve the Grand Rapids Griffins. All answers are correct as of Dec. 26, 2013.

A: The number of games of the Detroit Red Wings’ longest consecutive wins streak (Hint: This streak has been matched seven times).

B: The number of goals Chris Osgood scored in his career.

C: The number of franchises the Detroit Red Wings have defeated in the Stanley Cup Finals to win the Stanley Cup (Note: Detroit has defeated two franchises more than once. Count these franchises only one time each.).

D: The Grand Rapids Griffins were members of the International Hockey League from 1996-2001. How many Turner Cup championships did they win before joining the American Hockey League?

E: The number of seasons the Griffins failed to qualify for the AHL Calder Cup Playoffs.

F: The number of NHL teams the Griffins have been affiliated with in their history + the number of Calder Cup championships won in their history.
