In 2008, the Linn County Conservation Board will celebrate 50 years of service to Linn County residents. A yearlong celebration is planned to highlight all the outdoor recreation opportunities available right here in Linn County. In celebration of Linn County Conservation's 50th Anniversary there will be 50 GeoCaches placed within various parks and recreation areas in the next year.< /p> Some of the caches will reveal a "clue" that will enable you to be eligible for a special prize drawing at the end of the season (December 2008).There is one featured cache each month. The Wakpicada Natural Area campgrounds are naturally separated into three public use areas. Campsites are primitive, but include a place for a ground fire and a picnic table. There are two pit-vault type restrooms that serve all three camping areas. Camping in this natural area is generally available from April 15 to October 15 - weather and ground conditions permitting. Camping unit capacity of the Wakpicada public use areas is generally considered to be 30 units or approximately 90 visitors. On-site camping fees are paid through the self-registration booth located at the main entrance to Wakpicada. Due to it's proximity to the Wapsipincion River - this area is prone to flooding during high water events. FLOODING INFORMATION - To check on any potential flooding situations please use the Wapsipinicon River Level link on our Links page. Levels in excess of 8 feet (check lower graph on page) in the city of Independece will frequently begin to cause minor flooding problems at Wakpicada. Additional facilities & features available at Wakpicada include: boat ramp, various wetlands for fishing & waterfowl hunting, a hiking/bridle trail and some remnant stands of prairie. This 865-acre park is a heavily used Linn County park. Even before it was a park, this area was admired for its scenic, natural beauty. The heavily wooded hills and valleys are divided by the Wapsipinicon River. The park is home to an abundance of native plants and animals including deer, wild turkey, squirrels, raccoons, rabbits, numerous songbirds and a wide variety of wild flowers. Beginning as primarily a rural picnic ground, Pinicon Ridge Park has developed into a modern recreation area. Facilities include a wildlife display area, an observation tower, picnic sites, playground equipment, boat ramp, paddleboat & canoe rental, sledding hill, several hiking trails, day-use lodges, shelters, numerous campsites and overnight cabins. The Pinicon Ridge Park dam on the Wapsipinicon River provides a 65-acre impoundment for water recreation.
