Geocache Description:

This Wherigo cache was approved on 9-20-2013 by John Meredith of Crown Hill Cemetery. The gates for Crown Hill Cemetery are open at 8AM and generally close between 5 and 6 PM. By the time you have completed this Wherigo, you'll have trekked about 8 miles of this historic cemetery. The special tool attribute refers exclusively to a GPSr capable of playing a Wherigo cartridge or a smart phone application that can play a Wherigo cartridge. New version uploaded 9/1/20.

Public art in a cemetery? People normally don't think of cemeteries when art is mentioned. Museums, public displays in artistic areas, schools and other institutions all come to mind first. However, I counter that some of the most beautiful art available to the public for viewing can be found in a cemetery, particularly historic ones like Cave Hill in Louisville, KY or Crown Hill right here in Indianapolis.

The ability to carve just a simple headstone takes artistic talent. The Winningham Boys, located near Bloomington, has recently carved a few headstones and the amount of time spent on each facet of his carvings shows that not just anyone has the capability or patience to do one the right way. The attention to detail, the planning that goes into what is on the marker, the selection of the medium, the working of the tools, and the care that goes into the work all reveal the best of the artists and their work.

The markers, monuments, and headstones you will be visiting represent just a very small selection of the art on display in this large historic cemetery. By no means did I select all the worthy pieces of art in this cemetery to include on this tour. Some pieces are over 125 years old and some are less than 10; some are carved from different types of stone while some are cast in bronze. Each one tells a story about the person who died or about the person who commissioned the artwork, sometimes both.

This IS a rather long tour. There are 33 zones, encompassing over 8 miles, you will visit along the way so I suggest you save your progress often in case problems arise. There will be questions you'll need to answer before you can move onto the next zone, but all of the answers you need will be near each piece of art and none are meant to be tricky or deceiving. You will be passing by other caches in the cemetery as well as stopping at 2-3 artworks that are starting points for caches. Feel free to take time away from this tour if you wish, but be sure to save before you do so. It is walkable but I STRONGLY encourage seekers to take a car or a bike to do this, while walking where a few of the zones are clustered. I've attempted to reduce the distance you'll travel but there are a few spots where the stages are farther apart. That being said, you'll need a minimum of one hour to do this Wherigo. When I beta tested the cartridge it took me one hour and five minutes. I expect it will take most people 1 1/2 hours to two hours to complete, without stopping for other caches.

Please remember that you are in a cemetery and show proper respect. If there is a service going on, please respect their privacy and grief and return at a later time. This is quite the beautiful area to spend time in, so feel free to take your time and enjoy your visit.

There is a FTF prize in the small camouflaged lock-n-lock container at the end of this tour as well as some swag and a logbook. Please rehide the cache as well as or better than you found it. There is a smaller zone at the final location to help you home in on the cache but I've also included coordinates if the Wherigo compass isn't accurate enough. You will receive an unlock code upon completion so keep wandering around until it is triggered.
