You are looking for a small camoflaged peanut butter jar. At one time this location was known as Hungerford Hill. The location is on what some call Route 1812 as this route was used by the military during the War of 1812 for those travelling from Toronto, Hamilton and Brantford towards the Detroit River and Amherstburg/Windsor areas and Detroit which at one time was in British territory.
It was here, at Hungerford Hill, that the Middlesex Militia of the British army was involved in a skirmish with American soldiers on August 30th, 1814, as the Americans headed west towards Detroit after conducting raids to the east in Oxford, at a location known today as Ingersoll. The British militia, composed mainly of volunteers from the area and augmented by Indian natives had been informed that the United States Rangers were headed west so a blockade was set up allowing an attack on the Americans which was won by the British thus preventing the Americans from holding strength in this area of Upper Canada as the region was known at that time with the American Rangers retreating to the east from here. To the east of here, at Brick Street Cemetery, located on Commissioners Road east of Topping Lane, lie some of those who played roles in the defeat of the Americans, including Phobe McNames who was known as the Laura Secord of this part of Upper Canada in the London area as she had provided medical aid to the members of the Middlesex Militia and natives. While seeking this cache please take the time to read the nearby historical plaque and learn a bit more of the local history. The plaque is located close to the spot that I made my descent down to where the geocache is hidden in the valley and I found that spot not too difficult to descend and return to the driveway and parking area to the north. If necessary one could park on the street across from the park entrance but remember Commissioners Road is a busy city road.
