Geocache Description:

On January 10, 2004 the very first EarthCache was placed in Australia by geoaware and his two daughters: Earthcache I - a simple geology tour of Wasp Head.  This event is to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first EarthCache.

Where:  Canadian Museum of Civilization, Marius Barbeau Salon
Date:  Saturday, January 11, 2014
Time:  10:00 a.m. meet inside near the bronze Canada Coat of Arms, close to the IMAX entrance.
Cost: Free - admission to the museum is not necessary to participate in this event. You will likely have to pay for parking though.

This event will take place at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau where you can find many fossils in the Manitoba Tyndall Stone used to construct the building.

I have contacted the Museum and was told that we can meet and warm up inside the Museum in the Marius Barbeau Salon, which is the open area between the theatre and the café (entrance off of Laurier street). This area is open to the public and admission does not have to be paid as it does not grant access to any exhibition halls. At 10:00 a.m., I will be standing near the bronze Canada Coat of Arms near the IMAX entrance. I will be wearing an EarthCache t-shirt and trackable name tags.

There will be a brief introduction and discussion about EarthCaches in general, then we will head outside to get a better look at the Tyndall Stone. I grew up in Manitoba and learned about these fossils in my geology classes at The University of Manitoba. I have been to the actual quarry to go fossil hunting through the piles of discarded rocks. In 2007, I created the Manitoba Tyndall Stone EarthCache in downtown Winnipeg to highlight these fossils. There were at least three spin-off EarthCaches that I am aware of, including one here at the Museum.

This will be a great opportunity to learn more about this decorative building stone while socializing with other geocachers and celebrating the anniversary of EarthCaching. Afterwards you can test your new fossil identification skills at NeoDorset's nearby EarthCache Tyndall Stone: Manitoba Rocks! if you haven't already completed it.

Please be sure to dress for the weather.  If/when necessary, we can move inside to warm up.

Will there be a souvenir?

Although there will be EarthCache-related events occurring around the world to celebrate this milestone, there will not be a souvenir issued for attending an EarthCache-related event or logging an EarthCache on that date. It seems the souvenir system is not currently set up to be able to assign souvenirs for only a subset of specific cache types. If that changes between now and the event, I will let you know.
