Ely Does It! Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

RobboAndMum: This cache was more of a "filler" cache to make a sort of a trail to encourage visitors to the harder caches back when we had more caches in the area, but with them gone and a bit of accidental hide damage kindly reported to us, we have decided to archive rather than adjust and will collect the container in due course.

Geocache Description:

The cache is a small tupperware container which holds a few small items, and is hidden off the path at the edge of a clearing.

Ely Lodge forest comprises 250 hectares of woodland, along the shores of Lower Lough Erne and rises to the Carrickreagh viewpoint. The forest contains a mixture of coniferous and broadleaved trees with a large proportion of mature European larch, and there are multiple waymarked trails running through it, along with fishing stands and a large jetty.

Until 1870, Ely Castle sat on the southern shore of Lower Lough Erne. At this time, the castle was in danger of collapsing and was demolished. However the stable block remained, and was converted and extended to become Ely Lodge - which is itself the former Ulster seat of the 5th Duke and Duchess of Westminster.

During WW2, Ely Lodge was home to Infantry Divisions of the United States Army, who were stationed here from 1942 until June 1944.

The suggested layby parking (P1) can be busy, especially on a Sunday. Although it is the closest to the cache, the path to the cache from here is steeper than the other suggested parking locations, which allow you to explore more of the forest and are also more likely to be unoccupied at peak times. The main car park (P2), will allow to access the cache from the same route as P1 but you do have to cross the road en route.
