Among the many and varied accomplishments and stories credited to Big Cedar James, perhaps the most significant and interesting is that surrounding his heroic demise. Just to the south of ground zero a frontier cabin used to stand, and one evening in the early Fall of 1801, it came under assault by a Shawnee war party. Big Cedar James happened to be visiting the family at the time, and lent his considerable fighting talents to the defense of the cabin. When the cabin was set afire by the bellicose Shawnee, he led the frontier family up this hill and sent them down across the valley to the north while he stayed behind to buy them some time to escape. As his shot and powder ran out, he rose to his feet and let out a demon-like roar which sent fear deep in to the hearts of the Shawnee. They were brave warriors as well though, and soon rallied and resumed their fire upon the brazen frontiersman. It was said over twelve arrows and one ball struck Big Cedar James, but he neither cried out, nor moved from his defiant standing position. This pushed the Shawnee to their limit and they fled the field, muttering fearfully about the supernatural demon man who could not be killed. Big Cedar James was found the next day by the family he saved, dead upon his feet. This cache is to remember that day and sits very near to the exact spot Big Cedar James left this Earth.
