Named after a town located in the Shire from the fantasy series The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien.
I first read the series when I was in 8th grade and still enjoy reading it today. There are currently 8 other geocaches in Ritter Farm Park that are all named for towns located in the Shire. In the books, the Shire is located in the northwest of Middle Earth about midway between the Misty Mountains and the Blue Mountains and just to the south of the Hills of Evendim. The Shire is described as a small but beautiful, idyllic and fruitful land, beloved by its inhabitants which is a very apt description of this park.
