The first aviation activity in Indiana County took place in the early 1920's on the Bennett Farm. In 1929, Indiana County opened its first airport, Hamilton Field, located along the East Pike. After World War II, it became clear that the airport needed to expand. The Indiana County commissioners acquired 208 acres of land northeast of the Borough which is the site of the current Indiana County Jimmy Stewart Airport. It was officially opened on September 3, 1951.
