#2 From the series ' Chapels in Lesvos '

This is the new Panagia Gorgona location just a few hundred meters away. You can have a nice stroll here and take your time finding it. You can always continue your walk following the paved (kalderimi) path to the beautiful beach Kaya. Have a swim and an ouzo at the taverna there.

Ναός Παναγίας Γοργόνας (Παναγία των ψαράδων):
Βρίσκεται στο γραφικό λιμένα της Σκάλας Συκαμινιάς, 48 χλμ βορειοδυτικά της πόλης της Μυτιλήνης. Είναι χτισμένος παραθαλάσσια, πάνω σε μικρό βράχο.
Πήρε το όνομα του από την εικόνα της Παναγίας Γοργόνας, η οποία παρουσιάζει την Παναγία με ουρά γοργόνας (έργο αγνώστου λαϊκού ζωγράφου).
Η εικόνα αυτή αποτέλεσε πηγή έμπνευσης του ομώνυμου λογοτεχνικού αριστουργήματος του διακεκριμένου Λέσβιου συγγραφέα Στρατή Μυριβήλη.
Η Παναγία Γοργόνα είναι η προστάτιδα των ψαράδων.

Panagia Gorgona (Virgin of the Fishermen):
Located in the picturesque harbor of Skala Sykaminia, 48 km northwest of the city of Mytilene.
It is built by the sea, on a small rock. It was named after the icon of Panagia Gorgona, which shows the Virgin Mary with a mermaid tail (an unknown folk artist).
This picture inspired the eponymous literary masterpiece acclaimed writer Stratis Lesbian Myrivilis.
The Virgin Mermaid is the patroness of fishermen.
