Geocache Description:

You can access this cache by either river(dock within .10 mile), walk-in (approximately 1/2 mile roundtrip), or park within 50', depending on your timing.
GZ is the former location of the Alton Box Club's sawmill. In the 1930's and 40's the trees were harvested from the area and sawn into lumber for the structures in the retreat. Alot of this work was done by local hillbillies from up and down the river and surrounding areas.

Congratulations to 60CGarsee for FTF!!!

From the first Roman water-powered stone saw mill in the 3rd century AD to the modern operation which can produce over 700 million board feet annualy the sawmill has, shall I say, made the cut.

Prior to the invention of the sawmill, boards were rived and planed, or more often sawn by two men with a whipsaw, using saddleblocks to hold the log, and a saw pit for the pitman who worked below. Sawing was slow, and required strong and hearty men. The topsawer had to be the stronger of the two because the saw was pulled in turn by each man, and the lower had the advantage of gravity. The topsawyer also had to guide the saw so that the board was of even thickness.

The area around GZ is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and should be enjoyed by all and remember,
Take only pictures, Leave only footprints
