L'intera zona nord-orientale di Favignana è fatta di calcarenite, erroneamente chiamato tufo e presenta l'aspetto assolutamente singolare di innumerevoli cave, grotte, sprofondamenti ed erosioni.
La calcarenite fu per secoli, insieme con la pesca e l'agricoltura, fonte primaria di guadagno per la popolazione; dentro questa roccia sedimentaria si muoveva un piccolo esercito di cavatori abilissimi e intorno a loro manovali, carrettieri, marinai delle tre isole e di Trapani.
Non si sa con esattezza a quando risalga lo sfruttamento del sottosuolo isolano : i vecchi ne parlano come di un'attività connaturata con Favignana e c'è chi lo fa risalire ad epoca romana. Gli arabi chiamavano le cave " le mafie ".
Negli ultimi due secoli e mezzo questa attività prese un eccezionale sviluppo.
La lavorazione era basata sul cottimo: il cavatore prendeva in appalto un terreno, lo preparava a proprie spese liberandolo dal " cappellaccio ", cioè dal calcare di pietra durissima superficiale che poteva avere anche uno spessore di 1-2 metri; quindi cominciava il lavoro di estrazione della calcarenite in blocchetti (conci) già perfettamente squadrati : cm 25 X 50 oppure 20 x 40 oppure 25 x 25. Egli veniva pagato a seconda dei blocchi consegnati: perciò lavorava dall'alba al tramonto, 12 o 14 ore, portandosi appresso i figli dall'età di 8-10 anni.
Le cave potevano essere del tipo qui detto a cielo aperto, ma spesso la roccia veniva attaccata lateralmente con gallerie dal livello del mare, al fine di raggiungere il materiale piú pregiato per compattezza e grana, che è sempre il piú profondo. Si lavorava dal sotto in su, scavando nella stessa roccia di calcarenite delle tacche cui aggrapparsi mani e piedi, facendo attenzione di lasciare grandi pilastri a sostegno delle volte rocciose che andavano formandosi a mano a mano che le caverne ingigantivano. L'area di scalo Cavallo è tutta un intrico di tali impressionanti costruzioni a « pileri », veri antri dedalici che si internano per centinaia di metri, in cui generazioni di cavatori trascorsero 50-60 anni di lavoro al buio, abbarbicati alla roccia o trasportando a spalla milioni di conci verso le barche o i carri. E le piste rocciose fuori delle cave sono tutte scritte dai pesanti solchi dei carri che arrancavano in salita, mentre le coste marine mostrano i segni dei molti piccoli attracchi per il carico a spalla su barche a vela che ininterrottamente facevano la spola da e per Trapani, Levanzo, Marettimo.
Gli strumenti usati erano la " mannara ", una specie di piccozza dalla " penna " o taglio largo, che serviva per tracciare e approfondire nella roccia i contorni del blocchetto di tufo o " cantuna "; lo " zappune " e il " piccune ", coi quali si estirpava il blocco. Nessun altro arnese aiutava il cavatore, che lavorava esclusivamente a occhio.
Durante la nostra vacanza a Favignana abbiamo nascosto un cache all'ingresso della cava molto facile da trovare.
Attenzione chiunque volesse inoltrarsi nelle grotte delle cave lo fa a suo rischio e pericolo.
The entire north-east area of Favignana is made of calcarenite, mistakenly called tufo and shows the absolutely singular appearance of countless quarries, caves, sinkholes and erosion.
The limestone was for centuries, with fishing and agriculture, the primary source of income for the population; in this sedimentary rock was moving a small army of skilled miners and around them laborers, teamsters , sailors of the three islands and Trapani .
It is not known exactly when began the use of subsoil island: the old men speak of it as an activity ingrained with Favignana and there are those who date it back to Roman times. The Arabs called the cave " mafias " .
Over the past two and a half centuries this activity took an exceptional development .
The work was based on piecework : The Quarrymen took in a land contract , prepared him at his own expense freeing it from the " hat ", that is from the limestone rock hard surface that could also have a thickness of 1-2 meters, and then began the work of extraction of limestone in blocks ( blocks ) already perfectly square : 25 X 50 cm or 20 x 40 or 25 x 25 . He was paid according to the blocks delivered : therefore he worked from dawn to dusk, 12 or 14 hours, by taking their children from the age of 8-10 years.
The quarries could be of the type mentioned here in the open, but often the rock was attached laterally with galleries from the sea level, in order to reach the most valuable material for compactness and grain , which is always the deepest . They worked from bottom to top , digging in the same rock of limestone notches cling to hands and feet, making sure to leave large pillars supporting the rocky times that were forming in the caves as they became enormous . The Yard Area Horse is a whole mess of these impressive buildings to " pileri ", real labyrinth caves you intern for hundreds of meters, where generations of miners spent 50-60 years working in the dark , clinging to the rock or carrying shoulder million blocks to boats or wagons. And the rocky tracks out of the quarries are all written by the heavy grooves of the carts trudging uphill , while the sea coasts show signs of the many small hooks to load on the shoulders of sailing boats that plied continuously to and from Trapani , Levanzo, Marettimo .
The instruments used were the " werewolf " , a kind of ax from the "pen" or cut off , which was used to plot and deepen the contours of the rock block of tufa or " Cantuna " , and the " zappune " and the " piccune " with which they uproot the block . No other tool helped the quarryman , who worked exclusively in eye .
During our holiday in Favignana we have hidden a cache at the entrance of the quarry very easy to find.
