STORIE:
Sul lato nord della piazza si erge la Chiesa parrocchiale dei Santi Michele e Sebastiano (B), ricostruita a partire dal 1743. La vecchia chiesa, dedicata ai Santi Sebastiano e Fabiano, venne ricostruita una prima volta nel 1596: aveva tre navate ed una cupola sul presbiterio. La nuova chiesa parrocchiale rappresenta a tutt'oggi uno degli esempi più significativi e meglio conservati di edificio sacro settecentesco nel Ponente ligure. La chiesa del Bestagno è un edificio ad aula unica dalle pareti ad andamento curvilineo particolarmente accentuato sia all'esterno che all'interno: il coro profondo e le cappelle laterali, due per ciascun fianco, contribuiscono a dilatare lo spazio accentuando il movimento di linee e superfici. La facciata leggermente rigonfia, stuccata e rivestita di intonaco candido, è vivacizzata da una partizione in due registri definiti da potenti cornicioni e lesene che inquadrano un profondo oculo polilobato; al di sopra dell'unico portale, entro una nicchia oltre la meridiana, «San Michele», statua in stucco della bottega dei Marvaldi. I battenti bronzei del portale sono opera di Maffeo Ferrari, di Ponte di Legno (1969). All'interno della chiesa, le pitture murali dispongono le quattro figure degli «Evangelisti». A destra, verso il cornicione, è un finto quadro, sempre ad affresco, con “San Giuseppe e Gesù Bambino”; a sinistra, il pendant con l'immacolata Concezione. Sono invece moderne le smaglianti vetrate istoriate, poste a chiudere le finestre quadrilobate settecentesche. Sulla controfacciata, una tribuna in muratura decorata ad affresco nel secolo XIX ospita il pregevole organo a tre campate, costruito dal celebre organaro genovese Luigi Angelo Ciurlo nel 1783-84. Sulla parete destra della navata, dopo un'acquasantiera in marmo del XVIII secolo, «Sant'Agata», statua in stucco entro nicchia. Sull'altare, «La Vergine col Bambino, San Giovanni Battista e le Anime del Purgatorio liberate dall'Angelo», dipinto su tela torse del misterioso «pittore d'Oneglia» retribuito nel 1759 per l'ancona del Suffragio. Segue quindi «Sant'Antonio da Padova», statua a stucco in nicchia ancora dell'atelier marvaldiano; la cappella seguente, dedicata al Sacro Cuore di Gesù, è decorata da un altare in stucco inquadrato da due colonne tortili dipinte in nero a simulare il marmo. Di seguito, sotto la statua a stucco di «San Giacomo Maggiore», trova posto entro un nicchione «San Michele vittorioso sul Demonio», vivace gruppo ligneo policromo, processionale, datato 10 gennaio 1831 e firmato da Giovanni Battista Zucchetto, membro della celebre famiglia di intagliatori originaria di Molini di Triora in valle Argentina. Il presbiterio è delimitato da una mossa balaustra marmorea, settecentesca, che introduce all'imponente macchina dell'altar maggiore, in marmo bianco apuano con intarsi policromi, scolpito nel 1791 dal marmoraro genovese Pedretti.

HISTORY:
On the north side of the piazza stands the Parish Church of St Michael and Sebastian, rebuilt in 1743. The old church, dedicated to Saint Sebastian and Saint Fabiano, had been rebuilt in 1596, had three naves and a dome over the presbytery. The new parish church represents one of the most significant and best preserved eighteenth-century religious building in Western Liguria . The church of Bestagno is an aisleless church with curvilinear walls both inside and outside, a deep choir and side chapels on each side of the church. On the façade, a deep polylobed oculus and a sundial. The bronze doors of the portal are the work of Maffeo Ferrari of Ponte di Legno (1969). The murals inside the church feature the Four Evangelists. On the right, towards the cornice, is a fresco with "Saint Joseph and the Christ Child " and on the left , a pendant with the Immaculate Conception. Modern stained-glass windows were placed to close the eighteenth century quadrilobate windows. On the brickwork soleas decorated with frescoes dating from the nineteenth century stands a beautiful three-manual organ, built by the famous organ builder Genoa Luigi Angelo Ciurlo in 1783-84. On the right wall of the nave, a holy water font in marble from the eighteenth century and a statue in stucco representing Saint Agatha. On the altar, a painting of “The Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and the Holy Souls in Purgatory freed by the Angel" painted on a canvas by the mysterious "Painter of Oneglia” in 1759, and "Saint Anthony of Padua" statue in stucco niche in the atelier still marvaldiano. The chapel , dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is decorated with a stucco altar and two twisted black painted columns. In a niche, under the statue of "Saint James the Greater , "Saint Michael vanquishing the Demon" in polychrome wood dated 10th January 1831 and signed by Giovanni Battista Zucchetto , member of a famous family of carvers in Molini di Triora. The presbytery is delimited by a marble balustrade from the eighteenth century. The impressive machine altar in white Apuano marble with inlaid polychrome was sculpted in 1791 by the Genoese marble artisan Pedretti.
