The John Innes Centre is a part of the Norwich Research Park, which also includes University of East Anglia, The Genome Analysis Centre, The Institute for Food Research, The Sainsbury Laboratory, The Norwich BioIncubator, The NRP Innovation Centre and the Norwich and Norfolk University Hospital.
The NRP as a whole has world-leading scientists who carry out research in multi-disciplinary fields ranging from Cancer to Wheat. In the John Innes Centre itself the research is conducted in a wide area of scientific fields of biological and chemical sciences, including microbiology, cell biology, biochemistry, chemistry, genetics, molecular biology, computational and mathematical biology.
The NRP also houses about 30 science and IT-based businesses. It has a staff strength of total 11,000 people, which includes 2,700 scientists, with a research budget of over £100 million. The NRP is the place where ground-breaking research takes place. It has even been in the news several times for the research undertaken here, including work being done in the field of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, and more recently related to the ash dieback disease, which has caused a substantial threat to UK's population of ash trees.
