Geocache Description:

Take a break from your travels to find an ammo can and explore a historic church. A short trek into the woods is required to get your smiley. Owned by the Hancock County Historical Society, the front door of the church is left open for travelers.

Located seven miles north of Sparta, Georgia, the academy town of Mt. Zion was founded in 1811 by wealthy planters seeking a religious education for their children. Mt. Zion church is all that remains of the town today.
This Greek Revival style church was built by Presbyterians in 1814 at a cost of $700. Services were held here until 1903, when the congregation had dwindled to less than 10. Methodists purchased the building that year and worshiped at Mt. Zion until 1958. The church stood empty from 1958 until 1969 when it was given to the Hancock County Foundation for Historic Preservation.
The building still stands unused, although restoration efforts are ongoing. Travelers are encouraged to view the church interior and remain respectful of the site.
