Les origines
Considéré comme un des grands ordres religieux du Moyen-Âge avec les Cisterciens et les Bénédictins, l'ordre des Prémontrés, fondé par Saint Norbert en 1121 près de Laon, dans le département de l'Aisne, a vivement contribué à l'histoire religieuse et spirituelle de la Lorraine jusqu'au XVIIe siècle.
De la petite abbaye Sainte-Marie-aux-Bois, située à une dizaine de kilomètres de Pont-à-Mousson, est née la grandiose Sainte-Marie-Majeure dès le début du XVIIe siècle, grâce à Servais de Lairuelz. Abbé prémontré de Verdun et réformateur de l'ordre, il fut aidé par les Jésuites de Pont-à-Mousson qui avaient fait de la ville, grâce à leur université, une cité religieuse et intellectuelle qui devint très vite un bastion de la foi catholique.
L'abbaye, telle qu'on la connaît aujourd'hui, a été édifiée dès 1705 sous le règne du duc Léopold 1er de Lorraine par l'architecte d'inspiration classique, Thomas Mordillac, qui en posa la première pierre.
Terminée par Nicolas Pierson, elle nous laisse également l’exemple d’un style baroque d'une sobriété très marquée.
En Lorraine, la vie religieuse et intellectuelle est très intense.
À la mort du duc Stanislas en 1766, l'édit royal qui rattache le duché à la France supprime la Compagnie de Jésus. C’est le déclin de la plupart des communautés religieuses de la ville.
Peu après, la Révolution provoque la fermeture de tous les couvents de la cité. Seule ou presque, l'Abbaye des Prémontrés survit. Au XIXe siècle, l'évêché de Nancy y installe un petit séminaire qui quitte l’abbaye en 1906, à la suite de la loi de séparation de l'Eglise et de l'État.
Elle est classée Monument Historique en 1910 puis cédée à la ville en 1912.
Origins
Regarded as one of the greatest religious orders of the Middle Ages, represented by among others the Cistercians and the Benedictines, the Norbertine order, founded by Saint Norbert in 1121 near Laon (department of Aisne, to the North of France) contributed strongly to the religious and spiritual history of Lorraine, until the 17th century.
From the small abbey of Sainte-Marie-aux-Bois, located to roughly 10 kilometres from Pont-à-Mousson, the impressive Sainte-Marie-Majeure rose at the beginning of the 17th century, thanks to Servais de Lairuelz, the Norbertine abbot of Verdun and reformer of the order. He was helped by the Jesuits of the town who, with their university, turned the town into a religious and intellectual centre that very quickly became a bastion of the Catholic faith.
According to the present knowledge, the abbey was started in 1705 under the reign of duke Leopold I of Lorraine and the classical architect, Thomas Mordillac who laid the first stone.
Completed by Nicolas Pierson, it also leaves us an example of a stripping sober Baroque style.
Here, the religious and intellectual life was the most prosperous. On the death of duke Stanislas in 1766, the royal edict which had joined Lorraine to France abolished the Society of Jesus. It was a decline of most of the religious communities in the city.
Shortly after, the Revolution put an end to all the convents in the city. The Norbertine abbey was almost the only one to survive. In the 19th century, the bishopric of Nancy created a small seminary. The professors quit the building in 1906 due to the law separating the State from the Church.
The abbey became a Historical Building in 1910. It belonged to the State, then was given to the city in 1912. It became a civil hospice until 1944.
Die Ursprünge
Im Mittelalter zusammen mit den Zisterzienser und den Benediktinerin als einer der größten religiösen Orden betrachtet, so hat der 1121 von Sankt Norbert bei Laon im Departement Aisne gegründete Prämonstratenserorden in starkem Maße bis zum XVII. Jahrhundert zur religiösen und spirituellen Geschichte Lothringens beigetragen. Aus der kleinen Abtei Sainte-Marie-aux-Bois, etwa zehn Kilometer von Pont-à-Mousson entfernt, ist zu Beginn des XVII. Jahrhunderts die grandiose Sainte-Marie-Majeure entstanden, und zwar von Servais de Lairuelz, Prämonstratenserabt von Verdun und Reformator des Ordens, der von den Jesuiten der Stadt unterstützt wurde, die aus dem kleinen Marktflecken und dank ihrer Universität, eine religiöse und intellektuelle Stätte gemacht haben, die sehr schnell zu einer Bastion des katholischen Glaubens wurde.
Die Abtei, so wie man sie heute kennt, wurde 1705 unter der Herrschaft des Herzogs Leopold I von Lothringen und vom klassischen Bauwerk inspirierten Architekten Thomas Mordillac errichtet, der auch den ersten Stein legte.
Schließlich wurde sie von Nicolas Pierson fertiggestellt und hinterlässt uns ebenso ein Beispiel des Barockstils mit auffallender Nüchternheit.
Man führte hier ein reiches religiöses und intellektuelles Leben. Als Stanislaus dann 1766 starb, erging ein königlicher Erlass, der Lothringen an Frankreich anband und schaffte den Jesuitenorden ab, was den Verfall der meisten religiösen Gemeinschaften der Stadt zur Folge hatte.
Kurz danach setzte die Revolution allen Klöstern der Stadt ein Ende. Alleine oder zumindest fast, überlebt die Prämonstratenserabtei. Im XIX. Jahrhundert richtete das Bistum von Nancy hier ein kleine Seminar ein. 1906 verließen die Lehrer das Gebäude 1906 aufgrund des Gesetzes zur Trennung von Staat und Kirche.
So wurde die zum Staatseigentum gewordene Abtei der Stadt im Jahre 1912 überlassen und wurde 1994 zum Zivilkrankenhaus.
