The name is a contraction of igugu lethu, which is Xhosa for our pride. Gugulethu was established in the 1960s due to the overcrowding of Langa, which was the only black residential area for Cape Town at the time. During the Apartheid era black South Africans were not permitted to live in the city of Cape Town, and many people were removed from areas such as District Six to Gugulethu, Nyanga and Langa.
Besides the horror stories like the Amy Biehl incident and the Gugulethu 7, Gugulethu has become a much safer place and now stands out as an area rich in culture with vibrant restaurants and small businesses running all the way through the township. The total population of Gugulethu sits at just under 100 000, the majority being Xhosa speaking.
Various festivals are held in Gugulethu every year like wine, jazz and also art festivals.
