Geocache Description:

Houston, we've had a problem.

These were the actual words uttered by Jack Swigert (not Jim Lovell, as the movie suggests) on Apollo 13 after Mission Control instructed the crew to stirr the hydrogen and oxygen tanks, resulting in an explosion two minutes later that crippled the spacecraft and changed the mission from a third trip to the moon to a struggle for their safe return to Earth. This cache is an attempt to highlight the success in the face of disaster.

Stage 1

You represent one of the three astronauts of the Apollo 13 crew. You will need to have a full crew present. You can decide who is Commander Jim Lovell, Command Module Pilot Jack Swigert, and Lunar Module Pilot Fred Haise. Together you must find the first stage for directions to stage 2. The first stage is at the posted coordinates. The problem is that all of you must wander like "you are drifting in space" as you try to recover from the damage to the Service Module.

In order to find stage 1, each of you must have a GPS-enabled smartphone.

  1. On your smartphone, open a browser.
  2. Go the the website https://geotrailsw.com/mob/
  3. Enter 3187 in the field for the mob that you are attending.
  4. Submit.
  5. The resulting page will direct you from there.

Once all three of you finds the correct location at the same time, you should receive message that directs you to stage 2.

Stage 2

Once the first stage is complete, you will be directed to the second stage where you will encounter a dilemma facing the crew as they struggle to survive the next four days until time of re-entry. No, there is no loss of power or lack of oxygen for this stage, but you must accomplish the task for direction to the final.

Once stage 2 is retrieved, the information needed to locate the final can been found written on the outside and/or found inside the container. The two sets of numbers found are represent the heading (in degrees) and the distance (in feet) to the final.

Final

With this information in hand, you now have to use your navigation skills to survive the return to Earth by projecting the final waypoint. With minimum power, Apollo 13 had to navigate manually, so by comparison, your task will be a snap!

The following are the checksum values for each set of numbers, in case the numbers cannot be read easily.

  • Heading --> 20
  • Distance --> 9

The cache is a small plastic container with log and room for small trade items. As always, bring your own writing instrument.

All stages are within walking distance of each other so parking at the Harrods Hill Park should do just fine.
