Geocache Description:

The Trimountain mining co.  Established in 1899, closed in 1920 due to low profits.  Re-opened by  the Copper Range Co in 1925, the mine struggled to be profitable.  Closed for good in 1930.

This is part one of a series of caches in the Trimountain mines.  There were 4 shafts sunk.  The shafts were some of the steepest in the Keweenaw at 70 degrees from horizontal.  The company produced 144 million lbs of refined copper.

This cache is at the hoisthouse for the #1 shaft.  The #1 closed early, and was often used to dump poor rock from the other mines.

If you come here from the #2 site, as you leave the #2 look up and down hill.  You will find a concrete tunnel uphill and a foundation downhill.  The foundation was the Compressor house for the #2.  The tunnel likely brought steam lines to the compressor and air lines back. I started the series by driving in off 7th ave to the #2 site, parking and walking the various trails to each site.
