Catch-22 is a satirical novel by the American author Joseph Heller. It is set during World War II and is frequently cited as one of the great literary works of the twentieth century. It uses a distinctive non-chronological third-person omniscient narration, describing events from different characters' points of view and out of sequence so that the time line develops along with the plot. The novel's popularity was such that the term "Catch-22" has entered common usage in the English language.
The novel follows Captain John Yossarian, a U.S. Army Air Forces B-25 bombardier. Yossarian's primary job was to peer down the Norden bombsight and drop bombs on the target. The novel looks into the experiences of Yossarian and the other airmen in the camp, and their attempts to keep their sanity in order to fulfill their service requirements so that they can return home. In the novel Heller uses the term Catch-22 as a general critique of bureaucratic operation and reasoning resulting in a "no-win situation." Catch-22 is a military rule, the self-contradictory circular logic that prevents anyone from avoiding combat missions.
In popular usage, a Catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules. Catch-22s often result from rules, regulations, or procedures that an individual is subject to but has no control over. One connotation of the term is that the creators of the "Catch-22" have created arbitrary rules in order to justify and conceal their own abuse of power.
Unlike the bureaucracy in the novel, it is easy to get what you want and log a find for Cache-22. Simply find the container, sign the log, and restore the container exactly as you found it. Finding a geocache is the ultimate act of sanity, so we would not want to make a placement that would drive you crazy.
Prior to beginning the hunt, there are two points to consider:
1. We request that finders please refrain from overt log spoilers or resorting to PAFs to make the find. Remember, we wouldn't create a arbitrary rule or abuse our CO power!
2. It may be tempting, but please don't park your B-25 or automobile on nearby Highway 83 / Powers Blvd. It is not safe and likely to attract the attention of local law enforcement.
3. Cachers have been using water at the GZ to aid in their search, which has been causing damage and making it harder on other cachers to make the find. Please don't use water at the GZ.
