My son and I often go walking/hiking on the four-wheeler and dirt bike trails in the desert in this southwest section of Roswell. A favorite walk of ours is to the banks of the Hondo River. Most of the year, the river is dry. But we are always excited at the special times it starts flowing! We wanted to put a cache near this special place.
We feel there are two options for your getting to the cache. First, if you have a vehicle that you don't mind taking on a rough dirt road, you can drive very near the cache on a dirt road (some sporadic gravel) on the south side of the Hondo River. The second option, if you are not comfortable driving your vehicle on a rough desert road, is to park at the baseball field south of the river and then hike 20 - 30 minutes back up to the Hondo River on four-wheeler trails to the cache.
Expect typical desert things: cacti, goatheads, ants, etc. The weather can be extremely hot and dry, so please stay hydrated. Unfortunatley, there is also a bunch of trash in the area, including broken bottles. Please stay on the dirt road and/or four-wheeler trails until you get very close to the cache. Then, it is just a little bit off the beaten path.
The cache itself is a little bigger than a film canister, but not much. There is a small prize for the FTF.
We hope you enjoy this cache!
