Six-eyed sand spider:
Family: Sicariidae.
Average body length: 10 - 15 mm; legs up to 60 mm.
Identification: Red-brown to yellow. Contrasting dark marks. Flat carapace. Six very small eyes, Body and legs covered with small setae (hooks). Legs are worn sideways.
Habitat: Dry and half dry desert areas, the lowveld, certain coastal areas. Under rocks, dug into sand and caves (beware geocachers for putting fingers and hands in these places!).
Behaviour: Night living. Does not move often, but if it moves very fast. Digs into sand and uses sand as camouflage. Jumps onto insects when they pass.
Venom: Strong cytotoxic. Can be lethal to humans . One of the six venomous spiders found in South Africa.
