Alma Dam 10/21/2013 photo AlmaDam3.jpg

Dam over the Pine River in Alma, Michigan. Picture graciously taken by Steve of HITECHTEAM from Michigan.

FTF goes to Ol'Fogies!

Down the street from where I grew up was an elderly couple that were the grandparents of my elementary school friend. This couple was special because they truly enjoyed kids and all the neighborhood kids called them Grandma and Grandpa. Although I somewhat remember the grandmother, I remember the grandfather even more because of what he would do with all of the neighborhood kids that came around and hung out with him.

Different times throughout the summer in the early evening Grandpa would pull out the long bamboo poles, a couple of old silver washtubs and a bucket of worms. And somehow it spread like wildfire that Grandpa was going to the dam to do some fishing. (This picture is of the actual dam.) And while he was loading all the stuff on top of and inside the big old station wagon, several kids would show up, with permission of course from the parents, to go fishing with Grandpa. This was prior seat belt requirements so we were in the front seat, the back seat and in the very back of the station wagon. Sometimes there would be as many as 7 kids crowded into that vehicle. This was also certainly pre-minivan.

Once we arrived at the riverbank just upstream about 100 feet from the dam we would climb out and a couple of the bigger kids would grab the washtubs and run down to the bank to fill them with water. Grandpa would pull the rods off the rooftop, pull out the bucket of worms and we would bait our hooks and drop them into the river. Before long we were catching bullheads right and left.

Poor Grandpa was running back and forth to each kid removing the fish and putting them in the washtubs. Grandpa never did get a chance to fish himself. By the time we were done there must have been well over 50 bullheads between those two washtubs. I don't think time wise we were out fishing more than an hour or two. But the time sure did go fast because we were having so much fun pulling out fish after fish after fish.

It would usually be dusk by the time we got back to Grandpa's house. We would once again climb back out of the station wagon and hug Grandpa before heading back to our homes. And as we were departing he would tell us to send over our dad's to get some fish.

You are looking for a camoed pill bottle. It is located in a nice quiet area away from the main park. Come sit and relax and think about something fun from your childhood. Please put the cache back as you found it.
