Signal the Frog returns to Low Earth Orbit for a six-month mission aboard the International Space Station!

Join us for a quick gathering to celebrate the launch of Soyuz 37 (TMA-11M) from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, including U.S. astronaut and Expedition 38 Flight Engineer Richard "Rick" Mastracchio (Twitter)(Geocaching) who will be carrying TB5JJN1 "International Space Station Travel Bug II by the 5th Grade Class of Chase Elementary School-Waterbury, CT". As the name implies, TB5JJN1 will be the second Travel Bug to visit the ISS, the first being TB27AH8 which was brought there by video game designer, U.S. space tourist, and geocacher Richard Garriott (LordBritish) aboard Soyuz TMA-13 in 2008 and returned to Earth in 2011 by U.S. Astronaut Greg Chamitoff on STS-134, the penultimate flight of the Space Shuttle program and final spaceflight of Endeavour.  While aboard the Station, Garriott also placed  GC1BE91 "International Space Station", currently the only geocache in space.  This November's Soyuz launch marks a Return To Flight for Geocaching, as the ISS TB2 rockets towards the station with Mastracchio and the crew of Expedition 38.

To celebrate the occassion, GroundSpeak is issuing a special Geocaching In Space Souvenir for your profile page, to all geocachers who Attend an Event on either 06/07 November, or on the actual date of the launch of Soyuz TMA-11M and Rick Mastracchio if the scheduled launch is delayed.  Please come to our celebration (also for me, the merging of my professional and recreational worlds!) and earn your souvenir!

Launch of the Soyuz is currently (as of 20 Oct) scheduled for 2013-11-07T04:14Z which translates locally to 9:14 PM Mountain Standard Time, Wednesday, November 6th.  As this time is during the workweek and on a school night in late fall, a full four hours past sunset, and a busy night for many families, holding the kind of event I'd like to have presents certain logistical and technical (not to mention discomfortable) challenges.  Therefore, this event will officially be a "Flash Mob" gathering for just 15 minutes beginning at 8:14 PM, one hour before launch to allow attendees time to return to their homes to watch the launch if they choose from the comfort of their living rooms.  The launch will be broadcast on NASA TV, which may be seen on DirecTV channel 346, Dish Network channel 286, or over the internet at UStream or here for other viewing options.

For mission status, including news updates and a live feed during countdown, I recommend following spaceflightnow.com.  During the next few weeks leading up to the launch, you may follow @AstroRM on Twitter for the astronaut perspective including Travel Bug updates.
