The Hana Highway in Maui is famous for its long and winding path which connects Kahului to Hana. The road takes drivers through tropical rainforests, hundreds of curves and several bridges built in the early 1900s. At the end of the road is the historical city of Hana, which has been inhabited by native Hawaiians for centuries. In the 1800s, sugar plantions began to operate in Hana, pioneered by George Wilfong. A long gravel road to Hana was completed in 1926, while sugarcane was still being grown in the area. It was around this time when the population was its largest, numbering in the thousands. The sugar plantations have since closed and several residents moved west. The population of Hana currently lies just above a thousand. Tourism has become the dominant industry for Hana, and there are now hotels and bed and breakfasts operating in the general area.
East Mercer Way isn't as well known as the road to Hana, but it still takes the form of a winding route through the dense forests of a more remote part of Mercer Island. I highly recommend driving to this cache from exit 8, which leads directly to East Mercer Way. Or better yet, ride to GZ on a bike (like I did).
