Nestled in the heart of Chattanooga’s North Shore, Stringer’s Ridge is an urban forest just five minutes from the heart of downtown. For decades the undeveloped land was privately owned which the community used as an unofficial park. A small network of user created trails crisscrossed the park to the benefit of hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers. Stringers Ridge is a 92 acre urban wilderness park located in North Chattanooga. The ridge overlooks the Tennessee River and can be viewed clearly from the downtown waterfront
This gem was almost lost when a developer entered into negotiations for the purpose of constructing ridge line apartments. When that project fell through, people throughout the community started exploring how the property could be acquired, preserved, and turned into a park.
Working with SORBA-Chattanooga, the Chattanooga Bike Club, and Wild Trails, the Trust for Public Land stepped up to lead the charge to preserve the property. Trails involve eight miles of singletrack trail for walking, hiking and mountain biking. The trails were laid-out and designed by professional trail builders. After the trail was cut using trail building machines, volunteers from SORBA-Chattanooga completed the finishing work by hand to ensure that the trails surface was smooth.
