Geocache Description:

This is a new series of Cashes hidden in a place we love & know well. Llyn Llech Owain Country Park.

Llyn Llech Owain Country Park

This is a stunning 158-acre expanse of woods and lakeland near Cross Hands with nature trails, an adventure area and visitor centre.

At the heart of this spectacular park is its dramatic lake which is surrounded by peat bog and there’s a lovely myth associated with Llyn Lech Owain. Legend has it that Owain Lawgoch ("Owain of the Red Hand" - who led an army of French mercenaries against the English in the Hundred Years' War), was entrusted to look after a well on the mountain named Mynydd Mawr. Each day, after extracting enough water for himself and his horse, Owain was always careful to replace the stone but on one occasion he forgot and a torrent of water poured down the side of the mountain. The resultant lake was hence named Llyn Lech Owain - the lake of Owain’s slab.

Today, specially constructed paths allow for safe access over the bog and around the lake. The paths are well-surfaced and accessible to wheelchair-users.

Llyn Llech Owain Country Park

A forest track provides a longer walk or cycle ride around the country park and there’s a rough mountain bike trail for the more adventurous cyclist.

Much of the park consists of coniferous woodland, planted by the Forestry Commission during the 1960s and there are also areas of dry heath and broad-leaved woodland.

We have had kind permission from the parks rangers Judith & Simon to place cashes here. As it is a Site of Scientific Interest they do ask that the park's rules are adhered too, In certain area's please stick to the path, keep your dogs under control and please, PLEASE pick up after your dog! As this is a very big problem for the park!

There is a car park which is chargeable (currently £2.50 all day or £1.00 for an hour), toilets, childrens play area, visitors centre with the history of the park.

This series of Cashes are designed with Geo kids in mind, will get them out walking in a safe area, no traffic to worry about! Somewhere for the family to come and spend all day or at least a good few hours of Geo fun plus somewhere nice for adults to relax & have a cuppa after.

The cashes are mostly in largeish clip box containers with fun toy swaps for the geokids. Hopefully in not too hard places.

The paths are mostly suitable for prams/wheelchairs however getting to the cashe in some area's may be difficult and after rain can be quite muddy! All the more fun for Geokids.

This cashe has a first to find trackable in it. Once found please log & move to another new cashe location. Please also watch the brambles/thorns!

Have fun!
