Did you know there is one bird that is considered to be the most ferocious predator as well as being the most intelligent of all?
You guessed it... Located just off a well maintained trail up above the University of Alaska Fairbanks Musk Ox farm and Botanical Gardens sits a Wise Old Owl.
The start of the trailhead is at N64 51.470 W147 51.279
Owls are birds of prey and they are regarded as raptors. Like all raptors, owls have razor-sharp beaks and powerful claws - called talons - they will use their talons to capture and kill their prey for food. Other birds that are considered raptors are falcons, eagles and hawks.
Owls don't invariably challenge individual raptors in the area with regard to their food. In fact, they generally share territories, mainly because in contrast to most raptors, owls are typically nocturnal. Meaning Owls conduct the greater part of their hunting at night when other raptors are sleeping.
Researchers think you'll find about two hundred distinctive forms of owls about the globe. Pretty much 20 species of owls are available in the continent of North America, 10 in Alaska alone. These days, owls are available on each and every continent except for Antarctica.
Once you see an owl, one of the primary factors you see is its big eyes. Owl eyes are so big, in reality that they simply cannot even roll their eyes within their eye sockets. Owls shift their heads nearly 360 degrees to see their area. There large eyes also help them to see greater at night when they do the majority of their hunting. Most owls can see about 3 times as well at night then you are able!
Surprisingly, most owls really do not hunt predominantly by sight. Instead, they hunt primarily by the sense of sound. There round face and their feathers actually collect the sounds like a large antenna dish.
Their hearing is also more precise as one ear is situated up on the head more so their brains can pin point more accurately what they are hearing due to the time differential it takes the sound to reach the ears.
So are owls genuinely clever? Researchers know obviously that they’re excellent predators.
As for precise knowledge, who knows?
