The area is known by its old Cornish name meaning “Cliffs of Hell” - Early records tell of smuggling and that this was also an area for wreckers who lured ships onto the rocks by extinguishing or moving the warning lanterns. There are also stories of tunnels running from buildings in the area down to the base of the cliffs or out to the surrounding fields on the cliff tops, providing the route for quickly moving the loot and escaping from the Revenue Men.
