Berrending.
Het Diola dorp Berrending tegen de grens met Zuid Senegal kent een sterke sociale structuur, waarbij beslissingen nog altijd op basis van concensus worden genomen.
De bevolking leeft van de landbouw en de visserij. Er is een klein ziekenhuis en er zijn wat schooltjes, maar zonder electriciteit en stromend water leven de mensen er in karige omstandigheden.
Water komt uit de put en huizen worden soms nog gebouwd van modder, palmhout en palmbladeren!

Ook cultureel zijn hier dingen te beleven, o.a. de Kumpo-dans.
Kumpo.
De Kumpo is een traditionele figuren in de mythologie van de Diola in de Casamance (Senegal) en ook in Gambia. Op geregelde tijdstippen in de loop van het jaar, wordt een traditioneel dansfeest in het dorp georganiseerd. De Samay nodigt iedereen uit om op het feest aanwezig te zijn. De Kumpo is verkleed in een pak van palmbladeren en draagt een stevige stok op het hoofd. Bij het begin van de dans wordt door een jongedame een gekleurde vlag aan de stok gebonden. Hij danst urenlang met de stok en de vlag op het hoofd. Hij spreekt een geheim taaltje, en communiceert via een tolk met de toehoorders.
Sociale achtergrond
Hij moedigt de gemeenschap aan om goede daden te stellen en op te komen voor het welzijn van de gemeenschap. Hij moedigt het gemeenschapsleven aan en vraagt niet beter dan dat alle aanwezigen het goed stellen op het feest. Het feest is dan ook een stimulans voor de sociale dorpsleven. Niet deelnemen aan het feest wordt sociaal afgestraft; het geeft geen goede indruk om zich af te zonderen. De ganse gemeenschap gaat op in het maken van heel ritmische muziek en navenante dansen. Volgens de traditie is de Kumpo geen persoon maar een geest. Het is dan ook volkomen verboden om te vragen naar de identiteit van de Kumpo. Hij mag niet benaderd worden en het is heiligschennis om onder de palmbladeren proberen te kijken. Daarom ook durft hij belagers af te schudden door met zijn stok te slaan of te steken! Op het einde van het feest neemt hij afscheid van de gemeenschap en trekt zich terug.

Zo is het leven hier nog, een bijzondere ervaring voor westerse mensen!

The Diola village Berrending at the Gambian - South Senegal border has a strong social structure and decisions are made based on consensus.
People live from agriculture and fishery. There is a small hospital and some little schools but without electricity and without flowing water life is meagre.
Water is coming from the well and houses are sometimes yet build of mudd, palmwood and palmleaves!

There is also the possibility to be introduced to village-culture, including the Kumpo dance.
Kumpo.
The Kumpo is a traditional figure in the mythology of the Diola people in the Casamance (Senegal) and in Gambia. Multiple times in the course of the year, a folk festival in the village is organized. The Samay invites the people of the village to participate with the festivity. The Kumpo is dressed with palm leaves and wears a stick on the head. At the start of the dance, a young lady binds a coloured flag on the stick. He dances for hours with the stick and the flag on the head. He speaks a private secret language, and communicates through an interpreter with the spectators.
Social background
He encourages the community to act as good villagers. He promotes everybody to participate to the community life, and wishes that all people are enjoying the feast. The festival is a stimulus for the social community live. Not participating to the feast is seen as anti-social behaviour. Nobody has the right to be lonely. The whole community enjoys to perform rhythmical music and to dance. According to the tradition, the Kumpo is not a person but a ghost.It is not done to ask about the real identity of the Kumpo. He may not be touched, and it is considered as a sacrilege to look into the palm leaves. Therefore he defends himself against intruders with his stick by smashing and pointing. At the end of the feast, he says goodbye to the community and revokes.
