La Chiesa della Madonnina in Prato è sicuramente tra i monumenti di maggiore interesse a Varese.
L’edificio, che deve il suo nome alla sua posizione originariamente isolata ai margini del borgo e circondata da prati, è in stile tardogotico di origine quattrocentesca ma è stato restaurato in modo importante nel Seicento.
La facciata, realizzata in stile tardo barocco tra il 1678 e il 1686, è sicuramente tra le più importanti della zona: si tratta infatti di un elemento altamente scenografico costituito da una serliana con telamoni. Il prospetto è chiaroscurato da elementi architettonici e da statue. Una statua della Madonna Immacolata domina l’intera facciata ed è circondata da due angeli musici.
All'interno, il santuario della Madonnina in Prato presenta interessanti decorazioni illusionistiche e decorazioni architettoniche. L’affresco sulla cappella a sinistra risale al XV secolo e raffigura la Madonna in Trono con Bambino. L’altare maggiore della Chiesa è stato realizzato in marmi policromi; ai quattro lati della cupola sono rappresentate le figure dei profeti che hanno narrato di Maria. Il ciclo di affreschi nel tiburio sono stati realizzati da Antonio Busca entro il 1667.
Il campanile fu portato a termine dall’architetto G. A. Speroni nel 1722.

The Madonnina in Prato Church is certainly among the most interesting monuments in Varese.
The building, which owes its name to its location originally isolated on the edge of the village and surrounded by meadows, was built in late Gothic style (XV century) but has been restored in XVII century.
The facade, built in late Baroque style between 1678 and 1686, is among the most important of the area and consist of a serliana with telamons. A statue of Our Lady Immaculate dominates the entire facade and is surrounded by two angel musicians.
Inside, the sanctuary of the Madonnina in Prato has interesting decorations and illusionistic architectural decorations. The fresco on the chapel on the left (XV century) depicts the Madonna Enthroned with Child. The high altar of the church was made of polychrome marble; at the four sides of the dome are represented the figures of prophets who told about Mary. The cycle of frescoes in the lantern were made by Antonio Busca by 1667.
The bell tower was completed in 1722 by architect G.A. Speroni.
