The Takashima castle is a castle which Toyotomi Hideyoshi's vassal Hineno Takayoshi built to the Suwa lakeside in 1598.
Since the surroundings of the castle seemed to be surrounded by the lake and the swamp and to have floated in Lake Suwa completely at the time of completion,
it was called the alias "Floating Castle of Suwa."
The Suwa family governed the Suwa district as a daimyo with a castle of this castle until the feudal lord became Meiji Era instead of the Suwa family henceforth after that.
The castle which became Meiji Era and became unnecessary was destroyed.
The castle is improved as a park now and, in the inside, the restored main tower has become a scientific library.
高島城は、豊臣秀吉の家臣、日根野高吉が1598年に諏訪湖畔に築いた城です。
完成当時は、城のまわりは湖水と湿地に囲まれ、あたかも諏訪湖中に浮かぶようであったので、別名「諏訪の浮城」と呼ばれました。
天守など主要な建物の屋根が瓦葺きではなく杮葺きだったことも、高島城の大きな特徴です。
湖畔の軟弱地盤で重い瓦が使えなかったからとか、寒冷地である諏訪では瓦は凍み割れてしまうからとか諸説あります。
その後日根野氏は転封となり、代わりに旧領主の諏訪氏が入封してきました。
以降は明治時代になるまで、諏訪氏がこの城の城主として、諏訪地方を支配しました。
明治時代になって、不要になった城は壊されました。
現在は、城は公園として整備されており、復元された天守は、内部は資料館になっています。
