The term blue moon originates in folklore. Different traditions place the extra "blue" full moon at different times. In calculating the dates for Lent and Easter, the Christians identified a Lenten moon. Historically, when the moons arrived too early, they called the early moon a so the Lenten moon came at its expected time.
So what is a Blue Moon and why do people say “Once in a Blue Moon” Here is one definition of a Blue Moon: A blue-colored moon is rare. But folklore has defined two different kinds of Blue Moons. A Blue Moon can be the second full moon in a month. Or it can be the third of four full moons in a season. Or as the Webster’s Dictionary tells us: A very long period of time —usually used in the phrase once in a blue moon ;such people happen along only once in a blue moon
