It is nicknamed quicksilver and is the only metal that is a liquid at normal conditions. It used to be thought to prolong life, but we now know it is highly toxic. Many countries have banned mercury use for some applications. Other chemicals are now being used as alternatives to mercury.
It has been used in thermometers, barometers, sphygmomanometers (blood pressure meters), valves, switches, relays, lamps, dental fillings, ointments, cosmetics, vaccines as a preservative, the antiseptic mercurochrome, jewelry, and athletic shoes with flashing lights in the heels. Its use in making hats led to the expression “mad as a hatter” which inspired Lewis Carroll.
When I was a child, I had a plastic maze filled with a blob of mercury. I loved to feel the weight of the mercury moving. Watch it slide effortlessly through the maze. Shake the maze to break the mercury into smaller blobs and then watch them reform. There is just something fascinating about watching quicksilver.
