An easy 2-stage Multi that maximizes the scenic experience. Stage 1 is in a high muggle area but should be a QEF with the hint.
Perfect coordinates and cell service are challenging deep in this canyon. Coordinates get you to about 8 feet. No need to go past the cliff barrier.
Stage 2 is in a generally low-muggle area across the bridge. AGAIN, NO NEED TO PAST THE FENCE BARRIER. BYOP.
Park in the free lot on the southeast side of the new Highway 49 bridge. Parking can be challenging in summer. This is one of the busiest visitor spots in the South Yuba River State Park.
Note the USGS benchmark on the northeast part of the old bridge.
The classic rainbow arch 1921 California Department of Highways bridge here was the last major new crossing of the South Yuba River. It was replaced in 1993 by the safer structure just downstream. Unfortunately, in the interest of safety, the new bridge denied passersby the extraordinary canyon view. You must now walk across the old bridge, but it's always a great view. Enjoy!
Dating back to the 1850s, Hoyt's (or Hoit's) Crossing 1 mile upstream was used as a difficult alternate to easier crossings at Jones Bar, Purdon, Edwards and Illinois Crossings. A few years after the arrival of the touring automobile, the 1921 bridge was constructed for new Highway 49 (formerly Hwy 25), opening up a large area north to Sierra County for tourists, campers, vacationers, hunters and fishermen. It has withstood several major floods, the last being in 1997 (see photo).
