Wheal Charlotte
Wheal Charlotte Mine was opened in 1806, when it was known as North Towan, as its backers hoped to exploit the rich copper lode that was yielding good profits at Wheal Towan. However, the results were disappointing and it was soon closed.
It was reopened again in the 1830s to work copper, when it was called New Charlotte after Great Wheal Charlotte, another nearby mine.
This cache is placed with permission from the National Trust who own and manage Wheal Charlotte, which as its name suggests is an old mining site. They recommend that you keep dogs and children under close supervision and pay particular attention to where you’re walking. It‘s also an important wildlife site so please help to look after it by leaving it as you found it.
