Geocache Description:

FlyingPig85 loves to travel!  She is naming her caches after airports around the world she’s flown into or out of and not the actual location of the caches.

12/08/14: New, fun, flying pig-appropriate container complete with a new log

***note: as of 6/3/14, I have upgraded this to a difficulty of 4. It is a very easy cache to find, but numerous people have indicated it as a DNF. It is in a VERY easy location, but the container is (apparently) tricky to spot. Please consider bounce of GPS off buildings and use your geosenses for an easy find. Thanks, FP85***

LHR has been in existence since 1929 as a small airfield named Great West Aerodrome in a tiny village of Heathrow.  After WWII, it became known as London Airport as its focus shifted from military to commercial air traffic.  In 1965, it became known as London Heathrow Airport.

It lies 14 miles west of central London and in 2012 served 70 million passengers. As of 2012, it is the third busiest airport in the world based on passenger traffic and handles more international passengers than any other airport in the world.

There are four active terminals which house about 125 gates.  On the two runways, 84 airlines fly their planes to 184 destinations worldwide.  JFK is its main destination with 2.8 million passengers flying there in 2012.  Dubai followed in second with 1.96 million.  Domestically, Edinburgh was its main destination with 1.25 million passengers flying from LHR.

If you’d like to learn more about LHR on a daily basis, you can subscribe to their Twitter feed at @yourheathrow where they post fun facts about the airport.  FlyingPig85 learned that there is a 2.1 km baggage tunnel that links Terminals 5, 3, and 1 and that it is the largest integrated baggage system in the world #yhfunfact.  While you seek this cache, FlyingPig85 is going to go see what else she can find out about LRH…..
