There are different theories about the origins of the word Snapphane. Some claim that the word originates from 'schnappen' in german, meaning "to snatch" or "grab", others claim it has to do with the rifles common amongst the Snapphanes. The Middle Low German word Snaphane means "(mounted) highwayman" and it seems that it could be a direct loan. There are also those who say that the word derived directly from the modern translation; "snabb hane", meaning "fast to cock", since the Snapphanes were just that, fast to cock their rifles.
