Il complesso del Battistero di San Pietro è costituito principalmente da quatto edifici databili tra il XII secolo e XIV secolo situati all’estremità est della via Maestra nel Borgo San Pietro. Essi sono: la quattrocentesca chiesa quadrata, l’adiacente Rotonda con la sua torre della metà del XII secolo, il vicino chiostro (del quale una parte era destinata ad Ospedale dei Pellegrini) ed una a Casa Priorale, che attualmente è sede del Museo Archeologico di Asti.
The complex of the Baptistery of San Pietro mainly consists of four buildings dating from the twelfth and fourteenth century, located at the eastern end of the Via Maestra in Borgo San Pietro. They are: the fifteenth-century church square, the adjacent Rotonda with its tower of the mid-twelfth century, the nearby cloister (a part of which was intended to Pilgrim Hospital) and at Priory House, which currently houses the Archaeological Museum of Asti.
La chiesa priorale, a base quadrata, fu realizzata in forme rinascimentali dall’astigiano Giorgio Valperga, Priore di Lombardia, con belle decorazioni in terracotta, e affreschi del XVII secolo.
La Rotonda del Santo Sepolcro è una costruzione romanica in mattoni ed arenaria,tipica monferrina; il perimetro interno, a pianta circolare, è costituito da otto colonne, collegate tra loro da archi a tutto sesto, il perimetro esterno è poligonale. La cupola centrale, poggia su un tamburo ottagonale. Gli architrave e gli archi della rotonda, presentano fregi in pietra d’arenaria risalenti al XII secolo. I primi sono figurati con immagini zoomorfe, i secondi rappresentano cornucopie o elementi di decorazione vegetale.
The priory church, with a square base, was built in Renaissance style dall'astigiano George Valperga, Prior of Lombardy, with beautiful terracotta decorations and frescoes of the seventeenth century.
The Rotonda of the Holy Sepulchre is a Romanesque building of brick and sandstone, typical Monferrato, the inner perimeter, to circular, consists of eight columns, linked together by arches, the outer perimeter is polygonal. The central dome rests on an octagonal drum. Lintels and arches of the roundabout, friezes stone sandstone dating from the twelfth century. The former are figured with zoomorphic images, the latter represent cornucopias or items of plant decoration.
Il battistero fu costruito ad imitazione del Santo Sepolcro di Gerusalemme dall’Ordine dei Cavalieri di S. Giovanni di Gerusalemme poi di Rodi, poi di Malta (Templari) che utilizzavano il complesso per ospitare i pellegrini della Via Francigena.
Al centro della Rotonda è situato un fonte battesimale marmoreo di fattura cinquecentesca oltre il quale, dalla parte opposta all’entrata, si accede all’adiacente aula quadrata. Questa, voluta dal priore Giorgio Valperga nel XV secolo, presenta ricchi fregi in terracotta alle doppie cornici delle finestre ad archi acuti ed alle mensole dei costoloni delle crociere.
Sono raffigurati florilegi e teste zoomorfe, che rappresentano il punto più alto raggiunto dalla lavorazione della terracotta ad Asti nel XIV secolo.
The baptistery was built in imitation of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and then Malta (Knights Templar) who used the complex to accommodate the pilgrims of the Way Francigena.
At the center of the Rotonda is located a marble baptismal font invoice century, beyond which, on the opposite the entrance, you enter the adjacent square hall. This, commissioned by the prior Giorgio Valperga in the fifteenth century, has rich terracotta friezes to double frames of the windows with pointed arches and shelves of the ribs of the cruises.
Are depicted anthologies and zoomorphic heads, which represent the highest point reached by working with clay in Asti in the fourteenth century.
In alcune sale del piano superiore sono esposti molti reperti archeologici di varia provenienza che spaziano da oggetti egizi, alla ceramica greca fino al materiale archeologico romano e barbarico.
In some of the rooms on the upper floor houses many archaeological finds from various backgrounds ranging from objects Egyptian, Greek pottery to the Roman archaeological material and barbaric.
