Crownhill Fort is one of several defensive structures built in the 1860s to defend Plymouth (and its Royal Dockyard) from a landward attack by the French forces of Napoleon III. Continual use by the military until the 1980s spared Crownhill Fort from major alteration, benign decay or demolition and what you see today closely resembles its original Victorian appearance. The Fort has been owned and managed by The Landmark Trust since 1986. The former military buildings generate revenue as Offices and Workshops, Education and Event spaces and there is also a holiday apartment within the Grounds. The Grounds of Crownhill Fort will be open on this date between midday to dusk so you could make a day of your visit.
Due to the overwhelming amount of interest I have hired Barrack Room 1. The bar is next door in the former Gunpowder Magazine and the museum rooms will be open throughout the evening.
