Zgadnij, kim jestem? Na pewno... najbardziej rozpowszechnioną skałą metamorficzną Ziemi. Powstałem pod wpływem przeobrażeń możliwych wyłącznie przy wysokich temperaturach i potężnym ciśnieniu. Dzięki temu mam charakterystyczną dla mnie, wyraźną teksturę kierunkową. Tworzące ją składniki mineralne z reguły przybierają postać blaszek i płytek ułożonych równolegle do siebie a prostopadle do kierunku ciśnienia. Ponieważ jestem gruboziarnisty, moja tekstura jest co prawda kierunkowa ale już nie łupkowa. A jaka? To jedno z pytań, na które musisz znaleźć odpowiedź. Pomogą ci w tym moje smugi i laminy! Moimi ulubionami kolorami są jasno- i ciemnoszary. Słucham? Nie, nie jestem ortognejsem. Ani granitem, choć ten i ów kamienarz sprzedaje mnie pod tą nazwą (mamy podobny skład mineralny). W Polsce można mnie spotkać najczęściej w Tatrach Zachodnich i w wielu rejonach Sudetów - z kolei na terenach nizinnych jestem "Tym, Który Przybywa z Północy" - pamiątką po ostatnim zlodowaceniu.

Who am I? Well, for sure I'm the most common metamorphic rock on Earth. I was created during a process involving high temperatures and pressures. This is why my texture has a typical orientation. It's composed of crystals of minerals, which are usually plate-shaped, aligned parallel to each other and perpendicular to the direction of pressure. Since I'm coarse-grained, we can say that my texture is of preferred mineral orientation type, but not slaty. What is it like, then? This is one of the questions you will have to answer. I hope that the streaks and laminae visible on my surface may serve as a hint. My favourite colours are light and dark grey. Pardon? No, I'm neither an orthogneiss nor granite (even though some stone masons sell me under that name, as we have a similar composition). In Poland you can meet me most often in the Western Tatras and in different parts of the Sudety Mountains. In the lowlands I'm known as the One-Who-Comes-From-The-North - a reminder of the last glaciation.

Rate mal, wer ich bin? Nun... ich bin weltweit verbreitet, oft - aber nicht immer - findet man mich in den Kratonen, den alten Kernen der Kontinente. Bei guten, sprich relativ hohen Temperatur-Druck-Bedingungen, "gedeihe" ich am besten. Also doch ein Tiefengestein. An die Oberfläche komme ich entweder mithilfe einer tiefgreifenden Erosion oder weil mich Platentektonik an die Oberfläche hob. Ja, meine Textur ist schon sehr auffällig und lässt mich recht schnell einordnen. Oder... doch nicht? Nein, nein, ich bin zwar hell- bis dunkelgrau doch kein Orthogneis. Auch kein Granit, wobei mich dieser und jener Steinmetz unter dem Namen weiter verkloppt. Alpen, Westlicher Teil der Hohen Tatra, Sudeten - da bin ich oft zu Hause. Hier, im Flachland, bin ich natürlich "der, der aus dem Norden kommt" - eine Erinnerung an die letzte Vergletscherungphase des pleistozänen Eiszeitalters.
