This story takes place in Northern California. It is about a ridiculously insane man named Jacob (Jake for short) who has a serious medical condition he calls cosmopsis. This craziness is only reflected in his infatuation with the Greek sculpture Laocoön . Jake frequently consults Laocoön and interprets according to his mood—with admiration, frustration, or indifference. While traveling through northern Sonoma County, he meets Peggy Rankin a school teacher he enlists to find a doctor for some unseemly need. Unable to find a doctor who will agree to the procedure, Jake turns to the Doctor. Rennie dies from the botched XXXXXXXXX. His relativist "cosmopsis" confirmed, Jake reverts to his paralysis. "Only as bodies do his women defy male control: in XXX, in XXXXXXXXX, in death." Rennie expresses this overtly when she tells Jake, "f I love you at all, I don't just love you. I swear, along with it I honestly and truly hate your God-damned guts!" The plot twists and turns down many roads to the symbolic end of the road. Jacob Horner is presented as the author of the book, a first-person confession.
Jake travels out to West Sonoma County where the novel tackles controversial contemporary issues such as XXXXXXXX (which had yet to achieve wide social acceptance) and racial segregation. In these bizarre travels his cosmopsis becomes more serious and takes these ideas "to the end of the road". The End of the Road is in a realistic style that may come as a surprise to those familiar only with his later books. The narrator avoids naturalistic descriptions of his surroundings, and most other details, and describes the physical aspects of life (especially of women) with disgust or contempt. He indulges in occasional bursts of eloquence: "A turning down of dinner damped, in ways subtle past knowing, manic keys on the flute of me, least pressed of all, which for a moment had shrilled me rarely". In the form of a therapeutic psychodrama, the author continues his story. While this story is set in 1951–53, I still call it an "ideological farce", a genre he considered a "special type" with few contemporary examples As Jake travels through Western Sonoma County he visits inside his mind to The End of the Road in 1955 but you can ignore this if you like.
